From Classroom Idea to Real-World Innovation: Meet Cruz

Innovation doesn’t always start in a lab or a boardroom. Sometimes, it starts in a classroom…with a student willing to think a little differently.

Cruz, a gifted student from the Avondale Elementary School District, did just that with his project, the “Drippy Zippy.” What began as a creative idea quickly turned into something much bigger.

At the district’s Expertise Expo, a Shark Tank–themed event, Cruz joined fellow gifted students in pitching original ideas to an audience. But for Cruz, this wasn’t just about the presentation or the moment on stage.

He kept going.

Driven by curiosity and determination, Cruz continued developing the Drippy Zippy beyond the classroom. His commitment paid off in a big way—he was awarded a grant from Arizona State University to pursue a patent for his unique sweater design.

Let that sink in for a second…a student taking an idea from a school project all the way to potential patent.

This is exactly what happens when gifted learners are given the space to create, take risks, and follow their ideas beyond the assignment.

Cruz isn’t just participating in learning. He’s shaping it.
