Study Committee Meeting on Funding for Gifted Pupils – October 21

The second meeting of the Study Committee on Special Education Weights and Funding for Gifted Pupils:

1:00 PM

This study committee is very important to all of us as it could have long term effects on how the state will fund gifted education in the future.

The current flow of funding for gifted education comes through two sources:

  1. Group A weighted funds distributed to districts that MAY be used for gifted programs and services.
  2. The $1 million dollar grant monies awarded in 2018 and again in 2019. These are DEDICATED funds to be used only for gifted education purposes. This requires us to go back every year to ask for funding.

The study committee will look at many funding options, including what we have now, to possibly make recommendations to lawmakers in the 2020 session.

How can you ACT now?

The study committee is allowing for parents, teachers and students to speak at Monday’s meeting to share their stories. We encourage as many of you from all over the state to attend if possible. You may “Request to Speak” on the AZLeg website at any point, including the day of.

Or log in and give a “thumbs up” for your support of Gifted Education!

Share Your Stories: See Me! Teach Me! Challenge Me! Understand Me! (

  • How Gifted Education affects you, your kids and the community.
  • What it was like for child or a child in your class before they were identified? How has transforming their education helped them now?
  • How often are students in your district overlooked and what are the ramifications?
  • What programs have you implemented that are showing successes that need ongoing support?
  • Teachers, what could you provide your students with dedicated, ongoing gifted funding?

AAGT’s Ask on Funding:

  1. Fully fund the mandate in statute. This would provide ongoing, dedicated funds to districts to supplement what a district is already spending on gifted education from the Group A weighted funds.
  2. Require districts to use a portion of Group A funds for gifted education.

We understand that you may not be able to attend this afternoon meeting, if you cannot come and share your story, please email your representative on the committee to share your story and ask them to please consider more funding for gifted education.
