Community Action Network ACTION ALERT: Interim Committee Meeting on Gifted Education
September 26, 2019
In addition to the 2019 Arizona Legislature allocating $1 million in grant funds for gifted education, members also approved the formation of a Legislative Interim Committee to study, Special Education Weights and Funding for Gifted Pupils.
This study committee is very important to us as it could have long term ramifications for how the state will fund gifted education in the future.
The current flow of funding for gifted education comes through two sources:
- Group A weighted funds distributed to districts that MAY be used for gifted programs and services.
- The $1 million dollar grant monies awarded in 2018 and again in 2019. These are DEDICATED funds to be used only for gifted education purposes. This requires us to go back every year to ask for funding.
The study committee will look at many options, including what we have now, to possibly make recommendations to lawmakers in the 2020 session. The committee is planning two meetings.
It is vitally important that we provide a large presence at these meetings and participate when we are allowed to in the discussion.
AAGT is still on message about funding: Fully fund the mandate in statute. This would provide ongoing, dedicated funds to districts. These funds were created to be supplemental to what a district is already spending on gifted education primarily from the Group A weighted funds. However, this requires districts to choose to use the Group A funds for gifted. Requiring districts to use a portion of Group A funds for gifted is part of our message as well.
The first meeting of this study committee is:
Monday, September 30, 2019
House Hearing Room #1
Please consider attending this meeting and bring students, grandparents, and members of the community, to show your support of the committee and to make sure they see those of us who care about our gifted students and their education take this seriously and want to be part of the solution.
