The Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented (AAGT) stands for equity and abhors the racial injustices that have devastated the lives of Black Americans across our country. Many have felt their hearts burning and breaking in the racism and chaos that has perforated our country. The lives of our Black Americans, our Black gifted students, our families and educators, are in emotional tumult and grief. AAGT shares in the pain and grief that is being suffered in our communities due to these racial injustices.
We recognize that healing will involve choices of action. In mythology a phoenix is reborn, rising from ashes. May we in our communities make the choice, like the phoenix, to rise up in civility and respect as advocates for our brothers and sisters of the human race. May we choose to rise up and extend a hand of comfort and healing, fulfilling Martin Luther King’s dream, that “one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ ”
AAGT is committed to promoting equity and diversity in the field of gifted education. We are committed to advocating for the diverse population of gifted and talented students in the state of Arizona so that gifted children of all races have the opportunity to achieve their potential and, like the phoenix, are able to choose to rise.
